Colorado’s 3 types of substitute teacher licenses

The Colorado substitute teacher license is also known as an authorization.

Becoming a qualified substitute teacher is easy! The Colorado Department of Education issues three types of substitute authorizations (1 yr, 3yr and 5yr) - based on your educational background and experience, which allows you to work as a substitute teacher in a Colorado public school district, BOECS, charter school or CDE-approved facility school. Issued without a specific content or endorsement area, all substitute authorizations are valid for serving in K-12 classrooms.

Obtaining your Colorado Substitute Authorization is a separate process from your interview process with Scoot and is done entirely through the Colorado Department of Education (CDE). Each candidate will follow the process and guidelines through the CDE website. Please follow this link to the CDE website to learn more about how to apply for and obtain your SubstituteAuthorization. At Scoot, we require all candidates to apply for a minimum 1 year Substitute Authorization within the first 30-60 days of being hired. The website also includes a lot of great resources, tips and tutorials to help substitutes have a successful subbing career. Follow this link to their resources.
