How to become a substitute teacher with Scoot in DC?

Our hiring process is simple and done on Fountain, our applicant screening software.

Online application

  1. Fill out basic information such as your name, email, and phone number.

  2. You’ll then be redirected to Fountain where you’ll complete the initial questionnaire to start the hiring process.

  3. Upload your resume. No worries if you don’t have one. You can indicate that you don’t have a resume and you’ll be redirected to another section that asks basic questions about your professional background.

  4. Hit submit and you’ve now finished the first part of the application! If your application is accepted, you’ll be contacted within 2-5 business days for a phone screening.

Phone screening

If your application is accepted, you’ll be invited to schedule a quick phone call.

This is NOT an interview. The purpose of this phone call is to get to know you better as we go over your submitted application.

If you’re approved to move forward, you’ll be contacted again to schedule a formal interview.

Before the interview

You’re required to complete two Fountain prompts before you’re ready to interview.

  1. Upload a copy of your resume if you have not yet done so.

  2. Upload your active teaching credential/s:

    • The District of Columbia does not have a substitute teaching credential. If you have a teaching credential issued by the District of Columbia please upload a copy of your certificate.

After the interview part 1:

Official documents

If you had a stellar interview, your consultant will email you to complete the next steps of the hiring process.

You’ll be asked to upload/submit the following:

  1. Identification documents

  2. ​​Three references including at least one supervisor

    • We contact these references via email, text and/or phone to review your previous work experience.

  3. Payroll information

    • This is so you can start getting paid right away!

After the interview part 2:

Background Check/Fingerprinting

The District of Columbia require 3 separate background checks:

  1. Child Protection Registry- CPR

    1. Scoot Requires that all DC Scooters complete and clear the DC Child Protection registry clearance. This background check is at no cost to the educator. The completion of this form is done online via your applicant portal. These results can take up to 21 business days to complete.

  2. 20 Year Work History

    1. In addition to your 3 references for Scoot Education. The District of Columbia requires references from all previous employers. If there is any overlap between the references you will need to inform them to complete both the Scoot Education Reference as well as the DC 20 Year Work History check.

  3. Local Background Check

    1. The District of Columbia requires a local background check. This background check is at no cost to the educator. The completion of this form is done online via your applicant portal.

  4. FBI Background Check

    1. The District of Columbia requires a Federal Bureau of Investigation clearance.

      1. If you have been background checked via the FBI within the last two years you can upload a copy of your previous clearance or give us access to your results.

      2. If you have not been background checked via the FBI you will need to get your background check process via Applicant Services. The results should be reported back within 48 hours. The cost of the FBI background check will be $47, Scoot will reimburse this fee.

After the interview part 3:

Mandatory training

After submitting all of your required document, you’ll be asked to complete three short training courses and quizzes on the following topics:

  1. Bloodborne Pathogens

  2. Mandated Reporter

  3. Sexual Harassment
