Our hiring process is almost completely online and can be completed, start to finish, in less than two weeks!

Apply online

Take 10-15 minutes to fill out and submit an online application and resume. We’ll get back to you within 2-5 business days.

Phone call

Before the call, upload any relevant teaching credentials or certifications. During the call, share what you’re looking to get out of teaching and your relevant work experience.

Virtual interview

During the interview, we’ll get to know you more; such as your career aspirations, subject, school, and grade level preferences, and more. Be prepared to talk about your qualifications and what makes you a stellar educator!

After the Interview Part 1:

Sign offer letter

Please note that the offer is conditional and is based on completing a background check, TB clearance, contacting references, and completing your mandatory training.

You’re officially hired, but in order to begin your work assignments, you’ll need to pass these onboarding steps required by the state and Scoot.

After the interview Part 2:

Background Checks & Document Collection: The state of Philadelphia requires 3 separate background checks, as well as the collection of TB and Act 168 reference collection.

1. Child Abuse History Clearance- CAHC

Pennsylvania requires all educators have a clear child abuse history before they are able to set foot in the classroom and be responsible for our students. This process is completely online and paid for up-front by Scoot - you'll receive an email shortly with a unique code to use for payment. It should take you no longer than 15 minutes to complete, start to finish.

2. Local Background Check

Pennsylvania uses PATCH (Pennsylvania Access to Criminal History) to run your background in the state database. This process is also fully online. There is an approximate $22 cost to submit your application, which Scoot will reimburse in your first pay check when you begin working - keep your receipt!

3. FBI Background Check

This is an out-of-pocket expense, approximately $26, for which Scoot will reimburse you in your first pay check once you begin working. Results take up to a week to be received by Scoot.

4. TB Test

Providing a negative TB test is a requirement to work with Scoot partner schools in the state of Pennsylvania. If you have a record of a negative TB test within the last three months, you don't need a new one. Note that if your TB test result is positive, you will be required to complete an x-ray to confirm that the TB is latent.

5. Act 168

Act 168 is a part of Pennsylvania law that requires an employment history review of anyone being considered for a position that has direct contact with children.

Employers are asked to verify if you have or have not had any investigations, disciplinary action or suspension/revocation of relevant licenses with respect to your employment with them, specifically due to sexual misconduct or abuse.

Official documents

After your stellar interview and going through the background check processes, your consultant will email you to complete the next steps of onboarding. You’ll be asked to upload/submit the following:

  1. Three references including at least one supervisor

    • We contact these references via email, text and/or phone to review your previous work experience.

  2. Payroll information

    • This is so you can start getting paid right away!

  3. Scoot Profile Photo

    • A friendly and professional headshot is your profile's first impression for schools. This helps them recognize you and may lead to more frequent bookings.

Complete your I-9

Form I-9, also known as the Employment Eligibility Verification form, is utilized by employers in the U.S. to verify the identity and employment eligibility of individuals they hire.

Our onboarding platform will guide you through the required documents, with common submissions including a U.S. passport, or a U.S. driver's license/ID card and a Social Security card. For details on acceptable i-9 documents, please refer to this website. After your documents are fully verified and your i-9 is complete, you can proceed with your application.

Academic Transcripts

To be a substitute teacher in Pennsylvania, the minimum requirement is that you hold a bachelor's degree. You will need to specify the highest level of education you have completed and upload a picture of your transcripts or degree.

After the interview Part 3:

Final Review

After completing all required steps, your application will be reviewed by our compliance team, which usually takes 1-3 business days. We will contact you if any documents or information are missing. If your documents and references are in order, you will be fully activated and approved as a Scoot Education educator.
